A correctly adjusted belt will take 5 to 8 seconds to reach full speed. Check the belt occasionally for fraying and nicks, and verify the idler pulley really does rotate. A frozen idler pulley bearing can cause friction on both the belt and pulley the belt will get weak and eventually fail, often due to wearing a hole in the pulley and getting nicked on the metal opening.
